Health care in Spain

Free information on moving to and living in Spain

The decision to leave your own country to take up a life in Spain should not be made lightly and some thought should be given to how you will cope without the NHS and the medical services you are familiar with. If there are children or family members with on going medical conditions then these have also to be considered.
Before leaving home its wise to obtain an E111 form this will cover you for emergency treatment in Spain and whilst this form is designed for tourists it will ensure you obtain free treatment during the first couple of months. If you decide to take up permanent residency then the E-121 form should be obtained.

As in the Uk medical treatment in Spain is free or low cost for those people who contribute to the social security system, But in line with many EU countries the Spanish health service has waiting lists for specialists and routine operations. In different parts of Spain you will find the service provided by the regional governments differs quite noticeably, in the Valencian community for example routine operations on the waiting list after a period of a year are referred to Private Health Hospitals.
